Hey everyone. I'm fairly new on here with a new to me 07 street glide with 103 screaming eagle kit. 46000 Kms.
Ok so tonight out for a ride tonight and when I left home noticed I was running around 35 psi on the oil pressure gauge. After riding for 15 minutes noticed it was around 30 psi. So when I arrive home the gauge was reading close to zero psi while idling. Been reading a few articles on the Internet and people are saying this is a common thing to see? Is this a true fact?
I was so paranoid that when I pulled it into the garage I dumped the oil out and checked it as well as changed the filter. No metal shavings or anything else noticeable. The magnet was also clear of debris.
Hopefully I just jumped the gun here but would appreciate your feedback!!!!!! Also the 07 has no oil cooler, should I install one?
Thanks guys! Keep up the great site!
No need to worry, pressure drops dramatically at idle. Don't feel bad, went through a similar experience when I first started. I sometimes wonder if it would be easier without the guages, could ride without watching and worrying. LOL
Did you cut the filter open to look in there? I have an 07 and 4 years ago mine started to drop OP going down the road. It went from 32 to about 22, dropped the oil too and was ok for a couple more years, I attributed it to excessive ambient temps. Fast forward to last year, had the same issue again but it was a cold day, cut open the filter and had metal in it, found the oil pump coming apart from the excessive crank runout .005. Started vibrating like hell.
I just picked up my bike 3 days ago from getting the crank repinned and welded, eventually you most likely will have the same issue, and not being the original owner you dont know how it was treated before you got it.
As far as idle psi, it looks like it may be on 0 but if you look close the lines on the gauge are a lot closer together and it looks deceiving. Besides the oil light is on a 4 lb switch so as long as the lights not coming on, youre ok
Thanks for the advice! Feeling much better waking up and reading these comments.
Yes I did cut the filter to check it for shavings and found nothing. Think I'm going to order a cooler today. Is the hd one an ok option?
The use of roller bearings versus plain bearings means that higher oil pressure is not necessary like it is on sportbike or automotive engines. 5+ PSI is fine on these engines.
