H-D motors are dry sump and do not store oil inside the motor cases...when operating normally.

I assume the OP has a problem with the oil return system and oil is remaining in the crankcase "sumping" and the oil pump needs to be checked/serviced/replaced
just a guess

and we are sure that the oil is filling into the correct location...not the tranny fill...and that oil was drained from the correct drain...again not the tranny.
I have seen new riders confuse the 2 holes and dump quart after quart of oil into the tranny hole

Well guys everything I've checked is ok,primary fine, engine plug fine 3 maybe 31/2 ounces, pushrods normal(no gushing).Could it be possibly a bad bypass in the filter?Never heard that before, but worth a try.Whats sumping and whats the cure?

No mkguitar theres been no mistakes,I do my own maintenance and have for many yrs.I have time so I do one fluid at a time, keep the empty's till the next time as a reminder.Primed the filter as usual, put in 3 1/2 quarts, checked this morning was a third down, added that.Started it ,let it warm up (a usual)and light came on,shut it down and checked everything again, oil bag is dry and can't find the oil.

Im following this one, its hard to hide or loose a gallon of oil in a HD engine.

The OP says no smoke so its not burning it, primary and trans are not over full, not sumping pulled the crankcase plug and only got a few OZ of oil.... so where is it?

Makes no sence at all!! Even if something was plugged there wouldn't be that much oil gone there's just no where for it to hide. It has to be in one of the other cases!!

We need to understand the root cause, how does a normal engine generate oil problems after an oil and filter change? Where does 5 Qts of oil hide? The bottom end cases are just barely big enough for the flywheels but lets say it will hold a Qt, the rocker boxes shouldn't hold more than a Qt each. That leaves 2 more lost qts. Where else canthey hide.......
