I use an extended heel shifter and have no trouble with foot room.

Size 13 Red Wings take up a lot of space on a floorboard...

Took it off right after I got the bike, I`ve been meaning to put some kind of cover over the exposed splines (bought the bike new in Feb of `89).

I always use the heel shifter, but I'm careful not to stomp on it.

First thing I do when I buy a new bike. Lower the front and the rear shifter until they're comfortable and yet still functional.

Tried it, removed it. Raised the floorboards for more cornering clearance.

I used toe shifter for several years. Had a problem with nerve in left leg and got to where I couldn't use my toe to shift. I had to use the heel shifter and learned to like it. Even after nerve problem over I still use the heel. I learned to check other peoples bike before I rode them to make sure they had a heel shifter. Most embarrassing to stop the floor board and nothing happens.

Not entirely sure when the first heel shifter was put on a bike. This is from 1916 but it's the clutch . . .
