I have 4in klockwerks super savers on mine, purrs at idle, mellow cruising and bark when you get into it. 250-300 off of fleabay.

I can understand you wanting to de-cat if you did it to rid yourself of the heat which they produce. However the cats are a noise suppressor of sort also. I went with V&H front to back right off the showroom floor. No heat worries, and I don't find the exhaust noise to be excessive even with my tinnitus problems. If you don't find the cat heat to be a problem why not just put a stock system back on the bike?

I am totally with you Lonerider. I've had two different sets on my 88" RK. I had a pair of '06 CVO 4" muffs that had the cat in them. I had to core out the cat and they were very nice, but pretty quiet. "I thought" I wanted a louder muffer when my riding buddy's gave me chit about the quiet bike so I sold them...big mistake. I love my older SE mufflers (98B's) that I have now, but after adding a new cam they are just way to loud for touring. I leave them on around town for commuting.

Since I missed my CVO muffs, I was able to pick up pair that came on an '05. These are 3.5" and are acutally the old HD Touring Performance Mufflers which they put on the CVO bikes from '03 to '05. They are perfect for touring and still have a bit of a nice growl on acceleration. I am putting them on this weekend for an upcoming trip. It will be nice change.

This won't help the newer bikes much, but could be useful for all of us 88" riders out there.

It's not that the pipes are any louder without the cat and with the cams. It's the frequency induced drone that is particular to that setup. At cruising speeds, the exhaust note is not overly loud, but it is at some weird frequency such that my ears say, "No more!". I went through a tunnel and while I usually enjoy playing some "tunnel games", with this setup I felt like my head was in a breadbox with a fog horn going off. I couldn't get out soon enough! It must be my ears, kinda like a dog whistle driving them crazy when we can't hear it. Like I said, I have had Reinharts, V&H Pro Pipes, Samsons before and it's not the volume that is the issue in this case. Unless I come across some new information, I'm about convinced to go with the Supertrapp Fatshots. I like the idea of being able to tune them to my liking and they do look good. Thanks to all who took the time to chime in on my problem.

Finally got a bat wing SG and decided I wanted something quieter so I could maximize my music enjoyment. (I must be getting old!) So, after searching numerous threads regarding a "radio friendly" exhaust system, a lot of riders talked about the V&H Monster Ovals. Well, I heard a set at the local haunt, liked them and decided to pull the trigger. Nice low rumble and not as loud as either my Reinharts or Pro Pipe. They (and my A/C, 222 cams and PV) showed up and I put just the Monster Ovals on for S&G's until I got the time to put the cam, etc. in. Nice looks and sound and radio friendly. So far so good. A couple of weeks later I decat my header, install the cams, A/C and PV and it runs and sounds great. (Thanks guys at Fuel Moto!) Well, this weekend I took it out for the first extended ride and OMG! After about 45 minutes the low frequency drone from the MO's were driving me crazy. Not loud, but the frequency was unbelievably annoying. After 4 hours, I had to get off. I guess decatting the pipes and installing the cams did something. So, who has any other suggestion on a quieter exhaust system. Does anybody have any experience with the Supertrapp Big Shotz which have the disc you can remove to quiet it down? How about the Freedom Performance American Outlaws which have a quiet baffle option? Any suggestion will be appreciated. And please don't tell me to go back to stock. I do want it to sound like a Harley! Thanks. And for anyone interested, I have a set of V&H MO's w/ about 350 miles on them for sale.(Chrome w/ black tips)
Rush products perhaps...they'll bark some but at highway speed they are quite. I went with the Black Ceramic pipes 2 into 1 with a 2.50" baffle course they have a full line of exhaust systems available.

It's my understanding and I'm not sure but the Rush exhausts might be on the cheap side of the exhaust lists recommendations? I'm not sure if this is true? Installation was easy and the sound is what I wanted...Time will tell as I use on a 2012 RK...sound is nice though...and not over bearing at highways speeds but again, will bark some.

I have tried 5 sets now and thought I settled on Monster Rounds. I just did a 1 week trip down to California completing many 500+ mile days and have realized they have to go. Thinking the Fullsac X pipe route now. I have true dual headers and that is shooting me in the foot I believe.
Thought I'd like the Fatshotz but lost way too much power, (tried 5-15 disc configurations), especially with the closed end cap and they had a weird wheeze at idle. Twin Slash ovals lost even more power and nobody would ride with me. Twin Slash rounds with quiet baffles are pretty good but louder than the stock Monster Rounds which is where I'm at now. It's all subjective isn't it?

American Custom puts out a nice product with several baffle options. I recently installed them on my 2012 RK.

My 09 ultra had rush on it and was to loud for me, put the stock back on and are to quiet, thinking about some 4 " screaming eagles.

Don't use the closed endcaps, it will chock your engine and make it run real hot. I woulda started with the open caps with 15 taking 5 off at a time. I stopped at 5 each side with a de-catted stock header and they are just right for me.
