Default Road Tech Zumo 665 install question

Is it absolutely necessary to purchase the Ultra overlay harness on an Ultra Classic to install the dash mount with the 665. Seems like with the handlebar mount you dont need it so you could also just use the dash mount and hook up an XM antenna, power supply and route the audio into the aux input on the front of the HK. I wouldn't need the overlay harness which doesn't seem to add much functionality, except to mute HK audio when GPS instructions are given. The Nuvis I have used so far seem to already have that same feature AS LONG as you are getting your music from the GPS MP3 (or MP3/XM in the ZUMO's case). Anybody do this without the overlay harness?

Guess not, I'll bite the bullet and drop $85 on the ultra overlay harness

If you're not going to use the Navigation Interface Module, you don't need the harness. (The harness should already be on your Ultra from the factory. The harness is for Street glides, and Road Glide customs.) Here's the fitment chart. http://s7d1.scene7.com/s7/brochure/f...umSoundOptions

If you are going to use the AUX jack, all you need to do is hook up power, and plug in the AUX, and play your music out of the GPS. The XM, I'm not sure about. I have the 660.

I am not sure about the 665 either as I have the 660. In believe the NIM gives you the ability to have nav instructions come through radio as well as MP3 (if using media player on GPS) and phone calls.

Make sure they connect the Y connector to the NIM and route up to your Aux port on radio. My dealer forgot to so I only got the nav instructions. Had them connect the Y connector, now I can use my GPS as my media player. I have over 1K songs loaded on it and used it last weekend on random play all and it worked great.

+1 on that. The NIM is a key component to getting the Zumo to work through the HK radio. Lots of previous threads on this you can look through if you'd like, or you can take our word for it.

Most (I suspect) of these threads are in the touring section. I have the 660 on my Road King with the chrome HD handlebar mount. Not long ago I helped a buddy install his 665 on his Ultra using the crappy handlebar mount but it has a lot more flexibility than the HD mount. Don't think the mount came with the Road Tech (HD Zumo).

Op you are 100% correct. Go w/o it if you don't want nav instructions over riding the jk. That's what I did originally

I recently installed a dash mounted 665 on my Ultra Limited. I also installed the NIM. It allows the GPS directions to cut into whatever music your playing and come through your HK radio. It's a good setup and not too difficult to install, but you still have to use the front audio aux input jack on your radio to play your XM radio. I'd say there is one slight "fault" with the factory Harley HK radio. You will notice that the XM's volume will be a few volume clicks lower than your volume is while playing your FM radio or a CD. But,... that's nothing do with the 665, it's because that the volume just isn't as loud on the aux input jack on the from of your HK factory radio.
Bottom line,..... in my opinion it's still worth adding the NIM harness. And the dash mount looks neat and factory with no wires hanging out or needing to be zip-tied back.

Mine (660) is mounted with the handle bar mount with the aux connected on the front of the radio. Works fine. And yes the directions will still come over the speaakers, I just select the Aux when I am needing to hear voice directions is all.
