I had the measuring conversation with Jim at Fast Aire and basically everyone measures them differently; LRS, for example measures from the center of the middle screw and FA measures the amount of screen above the fairing. Some also measure on an angle with the screen whereas some measure straight up.....it's no wonder that everyone is confused.

Awesome. Going back to Santa Maria HD to try some more windshields today I love that they have demos but they only have two brands Klock Works and Slip Streamer.Hopefully one just a bit taller will eliminate the buffeting and allow me to see over it.

Just took the bike for a quick scoot and am pretty happy so far; the 7" recurve has WAY less buffeting than the stock SG shield. I only took her up to 55 or so, so I'll get out on the highway later and check it out at 75.

The only one that worked for me and was ready to hit the highway with was the EG Ultra, I was about to give up on finding the highway bike I was looking for until I finally rode the Ultra. I was surprised it was so quiet and buffet free at highway speeds, it being the only bike with lowers I suggest they have a lot to do with it, the Ultra also has the little deflectors on the fairing which are probably helping. I'm suggesting just a windshield may not get you to the point you want to be.

That's a great point and certainly there is more to the buffetting issue than just the windshield. In my case I'm hopeful I can find the right shield (so far, so good) which will;

- 1) look decent. this is subjective but the SG one is too low and too dark for me and the stock 12" clear is too tall and looks goofy.

- 2) reduces buffeting (compared to the SG shield) to a moderate level. I basically want to be able to see clearly without my FF helmet shield or glasses bouncing around. I'm not looking to eliminate the "wind in your face" feeling. The stock 12" doesn't have enough airflow for my liking.

- 3) allow me to comfortably look over top. For me the 7" seems to work pretty good and obviously anything smaller would as well but the 9" LRS was too tall. This is a trade off between #1 and #2

- 4) be strong, and last for awhile without undue scratching. This eliminated all the acrylic shields from consideration for me.

....these aren't in order of importance. If they were, #3 and #4 would be top followed by #2 and then #1....at the end of the day, I'm more of a "form follows function" kinda guy.

OK, just got back from Santa Maria HD I tried a Klock works "Flare" at 8.5" it actually worked really well but the top of the shield was damn near right in the middle of my field of view, just a little to high, and I just couldn't get past the way it looked.Then I tried a HD Slip Streamer 7" this worked fairly well with some random buffeting but nothing like the 6.5" "Flare" I tried earlier.Ive come to the conclusion that what I need is either a 7.5 or an eight.Niether brand they had available comes in that size.Just in case anyone was wondering the "Slip Streamers" are measured from the top of the center mounting hole.

Just got back from a highway test and the results are good;

the 7" Fast Aire recurve has significantly less buffeting than the 4" SG shield and I can still easily look over it. I figure I can see 50 - 60' out if I'm relaxed/slumping in the seat and that cuts in half if I straighten up. buffeting isn't gone, but I got exactly what I wanted; still have the "wind in the face" but I can now use my FF helmet with the shield up without getting my vision bounced around. Tried it up to 75mph or so.

I also experimented with moving my head up and down a couple of inches and I'm convinced a 6" would be too short from a buffeting perspective and anything taller than 7" would be too hard to see over for me. I'm also happy with the light tint as I can still see road debris, etc. easily through the shield.

Cheers,
Dave
