I had an awesome 2004 Road King Custom that was a total loss due to Hurricane Sandy. My first reaction was to buy a new Street Glide. I went to AMERICADE and rode almost every bike Harley brought there except for the Sportsters. Base opon many test rides I bought a 2013 Dyna Super Glide Custom! Why? It was the most fun to ride! Fast, light, no scraping floor boards. It is 200 lbs lighter than the Road King and I can put bags and a windshield on it. Not only that but it was dirt cheap. Best of all I paid what I received from the insurance company so I DO NOT HAVE A LOAN.
My personal motto is I do not take out loans for my toys.
Most important advice I can give you is to test ride as many bikes as possible. You may be shocked at what you find out.
By the way I will be 60 yrs. old in a month so I speak from experience.
Good Luck!
As said, only you can decide, and a weekend rental might be a good idea. Personally, I went with an 04, and don't regret it. Can't hardly imagine all the things I could do to it with the money I saved over a new bike.
You could always find a '09 used loaded with all the goodies already done on someones dime . I love my 06 SG but worried about my cam shoes even though at 29k they looked really good. Go ride a SG get it if you like it. Or just get one like I did cause I knew I would like it. If you like the looks of a bike go buy it/ride it. If you hate the looks of a bike but like the ride why get an ugly bike seems stupid to me.
