FlHTCU 07 pinging problems
I think the biggest downfall of this system is that most tuners dont what to learn it,and finding a tuner may take you far esp if your build goes outside there basic maps.Thats alot of cost vs a Sert or PC111.
There is a very informative thread, actually several, on another very large forum. Some of you are members there. I don't have a Thundermax but sure am thinking of one. (PC111 now which I like).
Has anyone cleared up the pinging problem without spending an extra $2000.00 in upgrades ??? I have 4000 miles on my 07 ultra and it has been pinging since I bought it(Labor Day weekend ).I run only the highest octaine fuel I can buy and it doesnt happen under heavy load ,only light to moderate load ,Hell it was pinging doing 85 in 6th downhill @ 75 deg,and too top it off I think I may have squashed the wristpins ,she seems to have what sounds to me like valvetrain noise between 2000-3000rpms. my service manager says he has testridden the bike and says What Noise???They dont have one of these smiliey faces strangling a servive manager so I guess I'll just have too
. Any way if someone has made HD admit to thier problem and come up with a solution please let me know before I have to put 850lbs of oops thru my local dealer window. Thanks Al
Of course the HD Master Tech that road the bike when I first took it in for the ping (and each of the follow-up visits) agreed that the noise is a PING!
But before you go spend a lot of money I'd say try this first if you haven't already.
Valve train noise get a mechanics stethoscope (or a very long screwdriver will work)
listen to the engine while parked at idle and other rpms. Put the 'scope down on the
cams and pushrod lifter blocks and move up to the rocker box, to try and locate the area noise is coming from and when (hot cold low high rpms).
Normally lifters / valve train will be noisy when cold (first startup) not warmed up.
As all the metal in the train expands and makes tolerances tighter. so even though this may help find where it is at, may not resolve the actual cause.
Pinging and wrist pin two different problems and sounds.
wrist pin is more of a knock (like a bad rod bearing) but is usually noticeable AFTER the spark as the explosion crashes piston down on the pin. rythmn changes with rpms as you rev up and down engine.
detonation /ping happens because the fuel /air mixture ignites from heat and compression just before the spark fires.
Advanced timing and too lean mixture will cause this.
HDMOCO has issued a voluntary service correction issue on this for some bikes.
They remap the ECM to adjust timing and air fuel to modify the torgue mapping.
this supposedly helps cool down the heat issue( a cause of pinging).
Severe detonation can ruin the piston, and because of the unintended out of time firing, can cause cylinder pressures high enough to rattle a valve that is off it's seat thus contributing to the valvetrain clatter.
So first I would go to dealer and besure the injectors are the new upgraded 06a 25 degree
and try and get the free remapping under the 0903 bulletin.
Also get it in on a work order and have their tech do whatever so it's documented.
After you've done that call HDMOCO csr and file a complaint and get a reference number so HD can track this issue and maybe come up with a favorable resolution.
After you've done this and you're ready to spend YOUR money, then look into the aircleaner, mufflers, sert or pc iii etc. most everybody else here has recommended.

Two trips to a dyno-tuner to get PC III and dyno-tune ---- and with the PC III and tune, the ping is much worse.
Without the PC III, the bikepings when at normal temp (210degrees oil temp or above), when going up a hill in 4th or 5th, from 2,200 RPM to 2,900 RPM,andI roll on the throttle. It only pings a few times, then I believe the ion detectors adjust the timing and the ping stops. I figure it should not ping at all unless I put low octane gas in it.
With the PC III, the bike pings in any gear with throttle roll-on, and pings above 3,000 RPM on level road with throttle roll-on.
The PC III is resting comfortably on my garage shelf. Took it out before it screwed up the engine.
May have another go at dyno-tuning but must wait until it warms up. The bike does not pingas long as the temps stay below 60 degrees. It is only in the summer (like when you want to ride the SOB) that it gets hot and pings.
I will never buy another new Harley. If I can sell this POS, I hope to find an early model, carb,TC88. Like '02 or earlier --- before Harley improved the engine by going from two main bearings on the drive side to one main bearing....... A bagger that came stockwith thechrome passenger grab rail - before the grab rail was a $128 add-on. Etc. Etc. A bagger that you can ride in the summer without actually burning your legs. I've been riding over 40 years and this is my 6th HD ---I loved the others--- but this one is truly a POS.
