Default '99 Road Glide Upgrade?

I have a '99 Road Glide that has 16,000 miles on it. Still looks like it came off the showroom. The more that I look at the new Road Glides the more that I like the looks but I wonder if it is worth holding onto the '99 (which is not costing a penny) and just doing some upgrades (exhaust, lower windshield, new stereo, etc.) or if it would be better to try and sell it while the mileage is low and go new???? I know after a few posts on here that it is highly recommended that the cam tension-er be upgraded to the hydraulic one as well. I know that opinions will very but I am stuck between spending a little money on my current one and do some changes or spend a lot more money but have something new or newer, I don't know what out ways what?????

Any ideas????

If you really like it and it is a carbed bike, go ahead and keep it. My '99 RG was the nicest bike I've ever had but it had intermittent electrical gremlins that never got straightened out.

Keep the one you have now...
everything can be upgraded...for far less than the difference between selling your and buying a new one...

say you want the front fairing to be like the new ones...get the newer blinkers hardware etc and the bracket that holdes the fairing from a 2010+ (different angle and higher) so that the turn signals aren't using the crash bar for support...but there is more ways to do it....there is plenty of threads on here.
radio upgrades...
Brake upgrades/swinarms etc

Im upgrading my 98 as we speak....so far im at 10K from purchase price/teaxes/parts
which includes a baker 6spd

When its said and done for my bike I'll have less in it then a new one and will be far better and done the way I want.

If I bought a new one i'd still spend 5-8k to make it look better..

If it was me, I would keep the 99; with a carb you have no EFI concerns. Tuning will be easier and cheaper when you do your engine mods.

If its in great shape with low miles and you own it outright, I think id just upgrade it.

Do a 95" Stage 2 (add big bore and cams)
Add a stablizer , shocks and monotube upgrade to the forks
Change the fairing mount to the new style, add a newer style windshield (KW, Cee Baliey, Windsplitter, Windvest)

and you have basically the same bike as a any RG up to 2009 when the new frames came out only better suspension about the same power and your into it for a few grand

This is my '99, I took off all the leather tassels as that's not my style. Part of my mixed feelings in looking at something newer is that the bike also has family sentimental value. Like I mentioned all of the chrome and paint are spotless. No chipping, cracking or scratches.

Perhaps a cheap start would be to put a lower windshield on it and see if that changes the front end look enough for me for a while.

I keep your bike. You can upgrade a bit at a time, or make a project one winter and get it done. I have a 2000 and I wouldn't trade it off for a new bike, at all. Mine was FI and that got changed out to carb, motor work, Bad Dad components, front wheel, new handle bars, and of course, new paint. Looks like a new bike. Whatever you decide, enjoy it. Ride Safe.
