New HD owner here with a Ultra Limited. Purchased the detachable tour pack kit and a slimmer streamlined seat for when the upper rack is off. Asked the dealer if I can remove the strap to facilitate changing the seat out faster and he basically stated that is not a good idea as it serves an important purpose and shouldn't be removed...didn't elaborate and I didn't ask.

Does it keep the seat more stable? The security part I can see, harder to steal but is it really a big deal to just to remove it?

If someone is going to steal the seat it would take about a 1/2 second to cut the strap with a knife.

It is ugly looking, seat looks much cleaner without. You are sitting on the seat so how is it going to fall off? it is loose over the seat, so no it has no holding function what so ever. if someone wants to steal your seat that strap isnt going to slow them down one bit.

Mine had to go. I use the stock seat when riding solo and change to the sundowner every time my wife wants to go along. The strap didn't serve any purpose for us and I wasn't going to remove and replace it every time I change seats.

It's the first thing I take off. If someone steals my stock seat, it will give me an excuse to buy a better seat!

That's what I did. There's no need to cut the strap.

So, I took both bags off and removed the offending strap. Now I can just do the rear screw and lift the seat off. Nice chrome end thingys on the strap though.
but now if someone else gets your bike they will never be able to get the seat off , they will keep looking for that darn strap to remove first , and the strap might also slow down a low life trying to steal your seat , although I suppose they would just cut it

While I am riding, there is close to 200 pounds keeping that seat secure, no strap needed.
