I installed 14" apes on my Electraglide about three years back. Got them from a local shop for 80 bucks (1 1/4 inch diam.). Wish i could recall the maker (Cycle Smith I think??) price was right so i grabbed em. But, I have been riding with a backrest for years. I have a Corbin seat with the small back rest. Its very short but is enough to really help, and it's not that visible if the look matters to you. The bars, back rest, and a few extra sets of pegs ( on crash bar, and a second set bolted to front of footboards) make all the difference in the world. And, my back is a train-wreck( to quote one of the Doctors before my first surgery). Still, the bars played a big part for me.

I use a backrest I honestly don't know how I ever rode without one

It takes weight off of your arms (you are not pulling yourself up supporting your weight) and makes rides so much more enjoyable. I would try that before investing in bars.
Thanks for your service!!

+1 on the back rest. Also try doing a few shoulder exercises and you will find a huge difference.
