Default dipstick temp. gauge

The dipstick gauge on my 05 Road King is saying error when I push the button. Could this be a dead battery in the gauge its self.

Could be out of oil that would cause an error.

Assuming you have oil and assuming you never changed the battery yes.
Remove it and take out the small screws to get at the battery and replace. It's also a good time to realign it if it never tightened to the spot you wanted to view it at.

Harley digital gauges are fickle.....mine, when I push the button gives me the temperature, but the level says "no sensor". My previous bike ('04 Ultra') I installed the dash mounted gauge...wasn't much help either.
My current bike has an oil cooler...and riding through Orlando FL a few weeks ago on John Young Parkway.....every traffic light I could feel the 'heat management' kicking in.
Digital dip stick no help then. Just ride on.

I carry a lab thermometer that the Company gave me and it's in my tool kit. Nice to have but I'll onlly check oil temp again if the bike exhibits any heat issues.

Last time I checked, I rode home 42 miles in 91* heat and the oil temp when I got home was just 216*. So I don't check it often....
