The new one doesn't rattle. I have them on both bikes.
FYI, inside back cover of the 2014 P&A catalog says that genuine parts & accessories bought from HD have a 1 year warranty (purchased after 1 Jan 2012)
I agree, it's a very handy item. I am too lazy to dig my keys out every time I fill up..
My push button release was getting very stiff, would stick and difficult to open. I removed the cylinder and lubed it with silicone spray....now it functions very well...and rattles like crazy. This has nothing to do with the lid spring. It is the cylinder. I have been contemplating figuring out how to take it apart and f##$@ with it....but have had other priorities.
Mine has been on for 5 years without a rattle. The hinge spring should give a little upward pressure. When I bought it the parts person told me that if the spring wasn't installed right it would rattle I remember looking at the crummy pictures in the installation directions and then tried it different ways until it worked right.
Put mine on a few thousand miles ago and no rattle. They are on the 14s at least the Limited, so if they rattle I'm sure there will be tons of posters along with other things people like about the 14. I think the push button is a cleaner install and it's silly to have a lock that anyone can open.
I have the stock barrel lock on my '12 FLHX. The whole lock and chrome door rattled and buzzed at certain RPM's. I fabricated a thin shim to go between the lock and the top side of the door so the latch pulled it down real snug against the rubber stops. Worked like a charm.
Here's what I finally did. I drilled a very small hole in both of the flat sides of the button, used a syringe filled with high temp grease, and filled it until it started to run out, then without pushing on the button I sealed up the holes with a dab of epoxy on each hole. After it dried, I had to work some of grease out after install. it stuck a little at first but after the excess grease came out it work really good. I've put on a couple hundred miles and no rattle. Hope this helps.
