On my 02, I have the original radio.
I haven't really used the radio.
I have one bad speaker. I was looking at those
J&M speakers on ebay. Are they decent?
I realize it's a cass/player, but I just want to get
it working so I can use it on longer rides.
I'm assuming (that word) that my ipod will work
with that aux port.
Thanks for any ideas.
I have used the J&M replacement speakers, driven by the stock head unit, on all my HDs and they work great. Your bike will need the 8 ohm versions that I am sure you have viewed on the website. You won't be disappointed with this upgrade.
Get ready for a hundred different recommendations! Kinda like asking which pipes sound the best. Some guys here like Hogtunes. I don't. I think you can do a whole lot better. Never heard J&M so I can't say. Go to radio shack & get the 12" cord with a male at each end, for your AUX port. It should work. Take a look at the Ram Mounts website. I've used them & they were great. (I now have a Sony head unit where the Ipod goes right inside it, so I don't use Ram anymore.)
Check the speaker ohms. I don't know when they went away from 8 ohm speakers. But ya do need to match ohms with stock head unit without an amp. I would recommend going with car speakers. Better sound for less money. Check out he audio section.
I had the 5.25" J&Ms in my Ultra and I wasn't much impressed with them (stock head unit). I replaced them with Biketronics 7.1 " speakers and I am very happy those - no distortion at any volume (still stock head unit).
Its basically apples to oranges though with the BTs being so much larger (and more expensive) But I can say that the J&Ms were too distorted at higher volume at highway speed... Just my 2 cents
As for the aux, it should work with any mp3 player / ipod as long as you have the double male cable (3.5mm I think) I do however recommend one of these if you have a bluetooth able device:
I've got one plugged into my cig lighter. I link up my ipod and put it in the tourpak or my pocket and control it with the Gogroove. The FM signal is strong enough to block any radio station that I have found - I just set it to my favorite station and it cuts in as soon as I turn it on, no looking for a frequency without a signal like all my past FM transmitters.
the J&M and Boom Audio (if they even have Boom Audio for the 02 as they are 8 ohm speakers) are decent upgrades for a stock head unit. Anything other than that, you'll want better speakers.
Thanks for that link.
I did just that.
I appreciate all the advise.
I'll give these J&M's a try.
If I really get into this stereo thing,
I'll upgrade the whole unit later. At least jump
into this century and get a CD player (HA HA)
I just like having the clock!! And a gas guage
that works. And other gauges I can see.
I REALLY like this bike !! Can you tell?
Next question - coming up.
