Well, tax time is here and the wife saysI can spend 1k on the bike. Since I often buy smaller acc that run 100-250. A grand is a big deal. There is so much I want to do. I need advice on what to buy. I want to change to 18" apes (I am 6'2' 350lbs.), But the factory bars are not uncomfortable to me and it would be only for looks. I was think of adding some horse power. Help me decide. Is only a grand enough for performance upgrade? If so, what should I be looking for? I have a mechanically stock '05 rk custom. And would love to get more power. I often ride on the highway at 80+ mph. But would love to rocket more off the line. Any advice from ya'll that are more knowledgable would be great. Keep in mind, I do not have the expertise to install, so the cost of installation is included in that price. Also, how hard is it to install apes? I put on so basic bolt on stuff, slip on exhaust and I installed the light bar myself, so I am not a complete idiot, But this is my first Harley, and I am a little intimidated working on my bike. I don't want to f up something and not be able to fix it. thanking you all in advance.-PapaTravis
Why not put a good set of gear driven cams in it? What is your riding style, 2 up or solo most of the time? Then the next time you get a gift of money go big bore.
Well of course there are lots of options! Your post seems to mention that you have an aftermarket exhaust already; if you don't have a high-flow air intake and fuel management system yet, they would be a great option and really boost your power and torque. Popular intakes are the Screaming Eagle Stage 1 from HD and the Arlen Ness Big Sucker; a K&N air filter element in your stock housing would also be an option. As for fuel management systems, some good choices are the HD SERT, the PCIII, and the V&H FuelPak.
As you mention, the apes would be a good appearance addition. You'll most likely need new cables, and if you elect to let your dealer do the install it will run you close to $900 depending on your choices.
And of course, you can easily burn up $1000 on chrome goodies from the P&A catalog!

Very good advice. Stage 1 AC, mufflers and caliberation of ECM buy SERT or PCIII will make an impressive gain in HP/TQ. another suggestion is the HD service manual for your bike. It makes doing things yourself much easier. Just read the manual until you understand what to do and why. The first thing you do instead of a dealer pays for the manual.
Ah, I forgot to mention that my bike is a carb model. So the pcIII is out. I still have the stock 40mm cv carb on , so thought that would make a difference. I already installed the SE intake and rejetted the carb. I did buy the service manual, the day I got my bike, actually. That was how I figured out the light bar, and used it to change out the grips as well. I always buy the manuals for all my vehicles. I have a small collection growing as I trade off cars likeold socks. Thanks for the advice and keep it coming. The wife is getting antsie , and if I don't spend it, she will.-PapaTravis
...depends on whether you want "bling" or "power"...bling I would chrome out front end..lowers, cowbells and new bars..power I would think about Mikuni, Dyna ignition and 203 or 211 cams and a good dyno tune.
