Default Crank Runout

Hello All, I have a 2013 ultra limited,103,1100 miles. I'm having a set of Dunns Heads,tw777 cams, throttle body polished,FM 2-1-2 header and a set of jackpot 4.5' pro touring mufflers installed. My main concern (in your opininions) is the MAXIMUM CRANK RUNOUT TOLERANCE without tear down and pinning the crank!! Any and all thoughts would be appreciated,Thanx P.S. Also posted in tech talk engines (tryin to get much serious feedback as possible)

From what I can make out the only reason for being concerned about crank runout is if you plan using gear-drive cams. A lot of fuss has been made about this subject, but if as you imply you are having your engine modified by a competent engine builder, he should be able to check and advise you, if he reckons your crank run-out is too much for your build.

The one thing you can be certain of is you will get a wide variety of views on this, but that is mine!

factory allows.012 that shaft goes through a cam plate that has a .0015 spec. see any problems there? I guess I;d be ok with .005 or .006, just because thats pretty good for a stock crank. didn't see any gear drive on your build sheet, so you'll be ok. if and when the pump goes out weld true and balance the wheels then. I did mine at 15k, screw the warranty, I didn't want to get stranded and I wanted to build my motor, so I just did it. As I do all my own work, it didn't cost quite as bad as if you pay, but it was worth it in the long run.

PS. I waited until 15k hoping it would go out,and I could to the bottom end on their dime, (minus the machine work, of course) then finally I just got impatient!

Crank run out just destroyed my motor in my 12' RK with 5k miles. Took out cam bearing and oil pump, lost oil pressure and lost front rod bearing. I do not have the coin to do what I want right now, so new motor was put in. If I had the jingle I would started with a good crank and a good build on MoCo's labor dime.

From building 2 bikes, advice I took was runout at cam side .007 or less is fine to build on as long as hp/tq aren't pushing too much over 120 which you will be under. ALso riding style ( no lugging then hard roll ons, no heavy downshifts, burnouts, holeshots etc..).

The spec used to be .003. Much more than that and the cam plate and oil pump suffer. I got lucky and mine is .002. If it was over 4-5 I'd of done the crank with 103.

That's what I remember from reading all of the engine guru's posts here and on the harleytechtalk forum.

But if you are not using gear driven cams, then why the question?

Thanx for all the replies so far!! If I don't change my mind,I beleive .007 will be my limit on runout. I know of 4 guys that have 103's,2011's. Lowest was .0025,2 wore .004 to .005 and .007. Hopefully, mine will come out the lowest out of all.

Hyd tensioners I wouldnt worry about it unless you are doing hole shots and wheelie stands. Dont get me wrong, the 07 and up cranks suck but most never will see them fail.

Its not about gear drive cams or crank failure. Its about cam plate wear and oil pump failure.
