Default Highway Peg Mounting Kit

I'm sure this is a noob question, but I'll ask it anyway....

I bought the highway peg mounting kit (p/n 50832-07A) to stretch out my legs on longer rides. I'm going to install it today, but something came to mind.. Should I put plumber's tape or something on the engine guard so the chrome doesn't scratch or simply mount it an not worry about it?

I'd hate to get the brackets on and then have to move them - only to find out that I scratched the chrome. The instructions don't address it, so I figured I'd ask some experts.

Thanks in advance.

No, you don't want any kind of tape on the bars.
If you do that, you have a very good chance of the highway pegs rotating and/or moving around on you.

Me, personally, I would put masking tape on the bars until you find the spot you want them permanently. Chances are the first place you put them is not where you will want them. When you find that spot, loosen then up, remove the tape, and put them where you like them.

My pegs left a mark where they were positioned for a while. Not nearly as noticeable as the scratches on the guard from dropping the bike.

I actually just mounted them, and moved them a couple times after sitting on the bike. I torqued them down pretty tight, and it didn't appear to leave any marks when I moved the bracket.

I used electrical tape that was wide enough to span the entire width of the clamping area, then cut it to fit on the inside of the clamps. After I found what I thought was the sweet spot, I simply tightened the clamps, with the tape intact.

As it turns out, I adjusted the pegs several times, but it never felt right, so I removed them! And even with the electrical tape, my bars managed to get scratched - Oh, you can't see it unless you're up close, but it's there.

If you ride your bike, it's going to get scratched, sooner or later...

So, to summarize:

Observation #1: You won't be able to find the sweet spot without actually riding the bike, so be prepared to make several adjustments.

Observation #2: You will scratch the bars.

Agreed. I just put them where I think they'll work. I'll take the bike out for a spin tonight and see how they work. The nice thing is there's an adjustable arm so maybe I won't move them quite as much..

Scratches? I don't need no stinkin' scratches!

Nobody wants scratches on their scoot, but eventually it's gonna happen...
