I am new here so if I sound like an idiot forgive me. I've never owned a Harley.
A dealer in Iowa about five hours from my house has an Electra Glide Police version with 515 miles. It is black and he has removed all cop stuff and put on a Street Glide seat and passenger floorboards. He says it looks brand new. He will sell it to me for 18k and have one of the techs add the factory cruise control at that price. It is under warranty until 5/26/14. It has a SG screen and passenger floorboards also (no tour pac; no radio).
Or I can buy a 2014 Street Glide Special for $4,500 more. Obviously I would have the new model, a two year warranty, a stereo and all the other improvements. It would have the ABS, security and the big touch screen (the cop Glide has ABS).
Do you guys think the resale on the 2014 will be so much better that it makes the extra $$$ worth it?
The '12 Cop Glide seems overpriced but I cannot figure out what the new MSRP is on one.
The '14 SG doesn't have the driving lights and has passenger pegs instead of floorboards but I am sure those are easy additions if I want them.
There's not enough new on the 14 SGs to warrant you being called a "guinea pig." Go with the new bike..you'll spend a ton of money getting the '12 to where you want it.

I was a "guinea pig" on the 2009's new frame and upgrades. No sweat- rode it for 5 years without a hitch. Now I'm riding the 2014 and loving it. 2 year warranty should cover most early adoption stuff. That said,I can understand the wait and see philosophy; it's always been sound. Guess it depends on your willingness to take risks.
I agree with your resale assessment. Ride the 2014. It's new front suspension makes a big diff IMO. For my money, it's the new SG all the way.
I rode a 2014 SG but not long enough to tell any difference between it and the 2013 I rode. I know the windshield vent did not help any with the buffeting I was getting on my modular helmet.
