Poor Acceleration
A friend of mine has a 2000 electra glide Classic. He has been having problems with acceleration. The bike has no power and it will not go over 75 miles an hour. We took a Harley, but it did not code out to anything and left everyone scratching their head. It now looks like the engine has the power it's just not releasing it to the drive. Any suggestions?

There's lots of things that could cause that. Low fuel pump pressure, partially plugged fuel filter, or maybe the ecm is crapping out. If an injector was bad it would probably run crappy all the time, not just over 75. Get a service manual and read thru the troubleshooting section. Anything can be fixed if you know what your looking for.,,

Unless I am mistaking, this bike has a carb, not FI. If that is the case, has the bike been setting for awhile, did this just start happening, say after a fill up? It sounds like maybe the main jets may be closing up, or there could be an air restriction if it blowing out black smoke.

If the engine makes power and it's not being transmitted to the rear wheel then I'd look into the clutch. Check the primary fluid level and perform clutch adjustments.

so EFI or carb?
that model came both ways.
the tips for EFI are above - if carb, similar...make sure the fuel flow is sufficient, plugged screen, crap in the carb, altered tuning, pinholed diaphragm.
etc.
etc.
these are basics and a competent shop should be able to sort out.
or...really true story.
A Guy at work complained that his evo Road King would not keep up with his Pal's who had other brand bikes.
He'd had the bike 4 years and had about 2500 miles on it- no mechanical aptitude.
I offered to mod his carb & do a screaming eagle intake and tune it.
So he brings the bike over, I have prepared all the stuff and within an hour am done and test ride.
I come back and he asks how it was and I say " it runs great- pulled quickly up to 90 MPH and then I went into 5th to 115 and she was still going"
He looked at me and said "Fifth ??"
he didn't know he had a 5 speed bike.
