Something has to be wrong with my map. I can't understand why most of you with larger displacement get much better mileage than my puny 88 inch engine.

I tune my cars with HP Tuners, and if bikes work the same, when in closed loop operation they base fueling on what the O2 sensor is telling the computer and it'll keep the bike at 14.7 afr. The fuel maps on cars matter only in throttle transitions and open loop (open loop is prior to warm up and at WOT, or close thereto).

I can tell you that the difference between 60 mph and 80 mph is dramatic on your MPG, I see 7 or more mpg difference in my car. Also, each time you blip the throttle you're injecting quite a bit of gas so that will make a difference. And start and stop makes a huge difference too.

Point is, your driving style dramatically affects your MPG. Those hypermilers in the Prius world like to never use the accelerator nor brake...momentum driving gets max mileage, and keeping it 55 mph or under has a huge effect.

If you drive steady state at 60-65 and have a steady throttle hand, you're going to get good mileage. If you drive 75-80 on the same road but vary your speeds and gun it from time to time, you'll get 5-7 mpg less I'd estimate.

I chalk that up to them being newer bikes. That is the trend I see in this. Newer bikes may have been set up to get better milage than our older bikes.

6 speed over drive and a little more torque. In the early 90's My 6 cylinder dakota got 18 mpg at best. i got that out of my 351 ford van as well. It was the last small truck i would own!....smaller displacement doesn't always equal more economy when dealing with weight and pushing through the air al la windshield, etc.

The new bikes have taller gears (pulleys I guess) dropping cruising rpm which helps in mileage a lot. The transmissions have the same 1:1 top gear, but 1-5 are lower ratios allowing the higher (lower numerically) final drive ratio.
