thanks for the advice ill look into the 54 and 57H as well as the SE204, actually when i was 18 i built a 383 for my 78 firebird and did exactly this, put a huge cam in without the proper heads or stall converter lol the cam i choose was on the line for stock heads and stall guess i should go along with that experience and put another 10k on the stock motor and do a 107 kit with big cams. as far as getting a sportster to hot rod, thats not gunna happen if anything ill get another crossbones, i only got traded that one for this one so the wife would be comfortable and stop complaining about not having anywhere to put anything lol

Great information. I was looking to upgrade on my cams on my RK. Didn't have to ask a redundant question...

The Andrews 57H are a good bolt in cam and so is the Cyclerama 575's. both are bolt in and will get you a lot more torque and some extra horses. Google Cyclerama in Pinellas park Florida and talk to Wes or Charlie there, they can help you out. are you doing the install yourself?

I've had SE 254E's, 255's, and 204's in a few HD's, Softails and Touring models. The 254's are smooth quiet runners with just a bit more T/HP than stock and great fuel economy. The 255's are great torque cams until 4K or a bit more, noisy, and can run hot but not too bad as some indicate. The 204's are great mid range T/HP. The only down is they can be rough a low speeds due to the overlap. If crawling through traffic is your norm, they are a PIA just above idle, but fun everywhere else.

Edit: Just to clarify my 204 comment. They aren't as smooth at and off idle as the others...but not bad rough spot. They tend to chug chug due to their intake and exhaust overlap timing, which gives them that great idle. Once the rider gets used to them they are the best of the HD's I've tried so far.

Before I decided on a cam I tried and listened to lots, I chose the SE204, it does sound hot at idle and pulls all the way to 5,000 rpm's, I never had any problems with them at slow speeds, I love them, and after the 97 inch S&S big bore went in I was wow she pulls.... The S&S heads are next this winter....

my worry is that ive heard and read that these cams are for high rpms and being a heavy touring bike something more flat and comes on quicker would be best. my problem is that i have 2 sepatate riding styles, one with the wife on the back and then theres my hot rod time by myself what direction should i go?
The TW 888's will work fine. You may want to go a step more and put the 30 tooth front pulley and 139 tooth belt on. This will give you the needed low end help but also will add to the entire torque range about 8%. You can also stick some Kompressor heads for 10.5:1 compression and really scream or you can go for ported heads. Have a couple of Dyna's with stock 103's and 888's and they work fine. We have a guy with 777's in a SG with 107 kit and it is awesome. Have TW 555's in 12 TK and the 30 tooth and it has more low end torque than the stock or 255 cams. It didn't before the 30 tooth. We used the 2012 triglide sprocket as it is much cheaper than aftermarket. Both have PV's. If you decide to go this way I can do you a map that will work. I put both these maps on. If the lift on the 888 concerns you the t-man TR 555 has same specs and is only 555 lift. Have one of these running in 2010 triglide and it does very well and sounds great. Ran for 2 years with True duals and cam then put Kompressor heads on and it picked up even more. Gave more low end. No ping in any of them. A good map/tune is necessary to make any of them work good.

I'm running Zippers .557, pulls to about 4k. Woods would be my next choice. Getting 95 ft lbs to the wheel on a 88" but I had head work too.

Sounds like some of you guys are more concerned about how the bike sounds at idle than you are about the performance of the cam/engine combination. I don't get that at all. The last thing I would want is to "sound" like the rest of the herd.

To the OP, you have been warned about over-camming....don't do it. Choose the 204 or the 57H and you will be a happy camper. (happier with the 57H imo)
