Default Replace switch housing - switches?

I'm trying to replace the switch housings on my '99 Electra Glide, running into a problem with pulling the switches out of the existing housing on the throttle side. Haven't looked at the clutch side yet.

It appears to me the switch slide in slots directly out but the switch covers are in the way. A backing plate.

Note on the edges where the wires are you can sorta see the slots/guides.

From what I can see that turn signal switch is not coming out unless the switch cover is removed.

How does that happen?

T.

PS: yeah, already lost the brake wedgie thing. Stupid Harley tech.

Just did this on my 04. Installed the extended turn signal switches. Loads of fun, that.

To remove the switches, you've got to remove the screws hiding down under that wiring. It holds that metal bracket down. Remove the screws.

Now lift the metal bracket at the back of the switch. It lifts in the switch housing about 1/8" and lets the switch come free. You will now be able to lift the switch up and backwards out of the housing. It's the same in both left and right housings, with a slight variation on the metal bracketry.

Gotta unscrew the plates holding them in.

And to save yourself a lot of misery, use a magnetic screwdriver. You'd almost need 3 hands if you don't.

I could have swore I did remove the screws, at least two of them. Maybe there's a third buried in there? Or perhaps I just didn't pull that bracket off. No one ever said I was the brightest bulb in the pack.

I'll take another look when I get home. Thanks all.

Oh yeah, magnetic screwdrivers are da bomb. Rip apart an old dead computer hard drive and save the magnets. Keep your tools attached to them and over time the tools will pick up that magnetism. Dang strong magnets.

There is another screw in there, and the re-assembly is just as tedious if not more. Remember to wedge your brake lever open or you will break that stop light switch.
