I had a chattering noise on the left side of my 2009 king, don't know if it the same chattering your are hearing.
I put one of the nice him-joint shifter rods on my bike and a couple of weeks afterwards I started noticing a chatter. The him-joint had some slack in them and would chatter at certain RPM's. A couple of O-rings solved the problem.
Based on all the information that you have described, I think the compensator may be the source.
Could be, but had the chattering before installing the SE compensator. And had it after installing the SE compensator, too. Today the chattering sounded more like knocking when I took the bike out for a spin. Hadn't been able to ride for a while thanks to Ohio weather. Quieted back down to a chatter after a few miles.
I replaced my lifter and put in adjustable SE push rods.....now the rattle happens till it warms up and after it sets for awhile.....I put louder pipes and if I really don't want to hear it I put ear plugs on. Going back to dino oil next rotation, synthetic is a waste since it doesn't even get to 3500 miles when I change it. Oh Oh did I just start an oil thread
Just an update from an old thread. Don't know if it was the shifter shaft seal, or the inner primary oil seal, or the starter o-ring, or just reinstalling the compensator/clutch/primary chain ... but I heard no chattering on the ride home from the dealership. Looking forward to NOT chattering thru the Smoky Mountains next month.
Bet is was the compensator. I had 2 installed three months apart. First replacement lasted about 3 weeks and started rattlin on takeoff again. Finally convinced the dealer to tear down again and sho nuf.... Been about 8 months and the third comp rattles on cold mornings with initial take off.. Bottom line is the comps are bad quality.. SE are no better. JMO
