At almost 59, I know that age and medical issues can change your goals and plans. (I thought I would be a tournament fighter all of my life too, and then there was this tumor that took half of paraspinal muscles with it.) Although I hope I'm far from here, I can foresee a time when I decide I am a risk to myself and others on two wheels.
I respect those that switch to a trike when the time is right. I can see myself doing that someday. (But I told my wife that if I ever mention getting a Can-Am Spyder, she should shoot me. )
I'd like a sidecar rig right now to give my grandson rides in, but can't justify the cost just for that. If/when I have to give up 2 wheels, I'd certainly want a trike, if I could still handle that - I think they're a lot closer to a bike than a car, and easy handling, which I've read and been told a sidecar rig isn't.
For me the only regret I have since owning my Tri Glide is I wish I would have done it earlier. This thing is a blast and NO looking back on my part. Oh, and the wife loves it too!
At 60 now and can still pick up the RG, though I would have no issue asking for help. (Hell, there are 30 years olds out there that have to ask for help!)
But I'm planning on going to a smaller and lighter bike and staying on 2 wheels if the time comes where the RG gets to be too much. ( My 83 year old neighbor is down to a Vespa!)
I am 60+ and have no intentions of going onto three wheels when the time comes. My wife has a Goldwing Trike which she dearly loves...but I do not share the same affection toward it! Although it gets the rider out into the breeze...It is like riding a water bed!
The upside is it has all the comforts of 4 wheels to include heater and stereo. Therefore...when I retired I bought a new 11' Shelby Mustang with a blown 5.4L. I fully intend that when the time comes I will also have to retire from 2 wheels and go to 4...I'll do it in style!
