Default Clutch "throw" adjustment question

Quick question.

The dealership adjusted my clutch when they did the 1000 mile service but when they did the "adjustment" they moved the ENGAGEMENT of my clutch almost to the end of the throw........meaning the scoot doesn't roll till the clutch handle is almost all the way OUT.

I'm going to adjust it myself, and wanted to confirm that the adjustment for the THROW only is this correct?....meaning I can move the engagement of the clutch closer to coming right off the grip by adjusting this nut....right?:

That will adjust the lever, you should have about a 1/8 inch free play when adjusted right.

Just adds play to the lever.

You need to adjust the clutch properly and then set your freeplay.

Also remember the bike needs to be room temperature, or it throws the adjustment off.

A warm engine and adjusting the clutch, can result in a slipping clutch.

Sounds like they did yours warm, and it is jsut short of being a slipping clutch.

That's what I thought.....thanks SCS. Guess a trip back to the dealer is in store. AND you are SO correct when you say that it is just short of a slipping clutch as that is exactly what it feels like it is trying to do.

Big thanks..........check is in the mail![8D]

Im going by what the pic you showed of the cable adjuster on the down tube in your post, this will adjust the lever, you can have a properly adjusted clutch( ceter adj. screw under large primary cover) and still have a bad adjustment at the lever, if once you get the free play at the lever set and it isnt like you want it I would return it to the dealer to have it set, since you just paid for it to be done right.

From the HD touring manual

Turn cable adjuster away from jam nut until slack is eliminated at hand lever.
Pull clutch cable ferrule away from clutch lever bracket to check free play.
Turn cable adjuster as nessacary to obtain 1/16 to 1/8 inch free play between cable ferrule and clutch lever bracket
So grab a rule, go out and pull the ferrule away and measure it.

NO.

It needs to be adjusted at the clutch (under the derby cover) then set the free play at the lever. Take it back to the dealer and have them do it right.
