I called Harley for price and was told $600. Was wondering if I could save and how much if I took it off and had it painted? If it's not a lot of trouble to take off.
You should be able to have it painted for $100.00 - $150.00.
However, it is quite a bit of work to take off and put back. Search the threads here, several guys have posted excellent step-by-step directions with pictures of how to do it.
As an aside, I would take pics of the innards of your fairing, the wiring and cable routing etc, before you take everything out or off. My indy service place hired a new mechanic, he installed my painted inner fairing, ran several wires wrong, they rubbed together, caused a short in the starter wiring, dead bike........ Luckily, my dealer ran down the problem and fixed it under warranty.
If you have the dealer put the new inner fairing on if you buy it from them, they will charge you 3 hours labor to put it on.
Don't know what color you have, but I had mine painted Vivid Black for $150. I had my lower speaker pods done at the same time so it might have been higher if all I did was the fairing. Other colors will be higher, especially if they have pearl finishes.
I removed mine and had it painted. It really is not as difficult as it seems. If you have a service manual and label all the connections and take your time its easier than you think. I paid $175 to get mine painted.
It's a pain in the *** taking it off and challenging putting it back on. I think the most difficult part was re-installing the ignition. My dealer also charged $600 for it to be done. But I removed it, took it to a local painter here in North Carolina and he painted it as well as some tweeters and repaired a small hole I put into it using a drill (don't drill and drink). He charged me something like $275 or $300.00. If I had to do it again, sure I can but seriously, it was a pain in the *** removing it.

I paid the dealer $500 for plus the labor for them to take it off and put it back on. Also had the bars changed out and the 1k service done at the same time. The reason mine was so expensive was because i had them do two tone big blue pearl/vivid black with matching pinstripe. Figured for the price two tone wasn't to bad. Got me exactly what I wanted for less than a solid one from the moco.
