Default Material to use for muffler packing?

I've just bought a set of 2" cores off Alice at Fullsac and a set of used stock mufflers off eBay and I'm assuming that the packing will be in a pretty brittle, compressed to non-existent state. What material could I use to pack in there?
Thanks in advance.

If I intended to keep the cans, I'd install stainless wool packing for mufflers (search up a vendor), or at least wrap a layer of stainless over the baffles covered by fiberglass packing or flat braided wrap for wood stove doors and furnaces.

I use fiberglass packing material for dirt bikes. Pick it up local and it's cheap.

I would not use stainless or any "steel" packing.

it is possible for particles to move up the pipes to the motor.

You may have a good point Mike. But, Rinehart used the material in their "Quiet" baffles at one point. And so have others, but who knows to what effect on valve and cylinder wear.

I'd also question the abrasiveness of "Glass" vs "Steel". Any FOD in reversion flow might be adverse, including dirt, carbon, and traditional glass fibers in the exhaust tract.

I have no proof one way or another. Do you have evidence that "Steel" or other packings have caused problems?

Just a question which deserves an answer so we can learn.

Check with the guys at Fuelmoto. They used to sell the same packing material they use in their pipes. Very high quality and after 5 years it is still in good shape on a pair I repacked.

I have been thinking about some CFR knock offs so I have followed many of their threads. One guys repacked them and left a good write up about it. Maybe this material will work for you -

When I did my Fullsac cores and screens I bought Techmat Muffler Packing wrap on eBay. Cut in half it was perfect for the CVO cans.
