How about a mercury switch that is set to come on automatically when the lid is opened?
You could probably gut one out of an old car alarm, or get them here for cheap

Bump: how did this project windup ?? i was doing a unrealted search and found this post and the idea sounds very cool, just wondering what hte final results looked like and how do you like the functionality
