My wife and I go to Bakersfield at least once a month to work cattle on our cowhorses there at the stockyards there called Sundance in Bakersfield. BK is a very economical place to live as far as housing is concerned, probably almost on par with washington state, lol. Way less liberals in BK compared to wa though. Don't even worry about the bike stuff, pipes etc. Gets hot in the summer.
whenever you come across a clusterf$ck on I 5 you can almost always count on Washington or Oregon plates being right in the middle of it all doing double nickles in the fast lane. Keep goin north. Just sayin...
Used to live in Ca., that extra 30K won't mean that much after the higher taxes, insurance and general cost of living suck you dry.
Yeah, but all of us in California love the ocean and Highway 1; how far do you have to ride to get to the ocean? Got a buddy in Colorado that is always telling me the same thing as what you said, but when I ask the same question of him, it's like a 1,300 mile ride... one way.
As far as the liberal politics and entitlements that seem to pay out forever, pretty much true. It's frustrating to see people pull out a stack of 50's and 100's while digging out their EBT card, but nothing the conservatives can do about it... you can, however, ride that Harley on some spectacularly beautiful roads.

How true ... within 1.5 hours ride I can: go to a nice mountain town for breakfast; have lunch at a great fish & chips place then walk across the street to the beach; go any number of places in LA and find a fine cigar; ride endless winding roads the entire day; go to Palm Springs; see a 100" telescope; and see as many weirdos as a I want at Venice Beach.
The new bike are set up for N/Y & Ca, DMV only checks the vin to mach the paper thats it. If your coming to the big valley cowboy boots are a requirement. They made us take the gun racks off our back windows it was scaring the new people coming to towns. And for that salty water it f-cks up the chrome. Give me a dry hot day and I now I'm home. As a native Ca we try to discourage more people moving to this god offal State.
Another California expert who doesn't know what he's talking about.
MOTORCYCLE HELMET ENFORCEMENT
Current California Highway Patrol (CHP) motorcycle helmet policy Is the result of several court decisions and the terms of a partially-vacated decision placed against the Department which make It extremely difficult to cite motorcyclists for wearing helmets not in compliance with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) #218.
With approval of the 2009 Uniform Bail SchedUle, a citation for a violation of California
Vehicle Code (VC) Section 27B03(b) or (c), when wearing a non compliant head
covering, can be eligible for correction.
As a result. the CHP is revising its policy to reflect the, following:
Officers shall not cite for hard shell beenie type helmets.
Officers shall not seize any helmet. or purported helmet as evidence.
Supervisor approval shall be obtained before citing a motorcyclist for wearing any type of head covering an officer determines is not a motorcycle helmet
• A photograph of the noncompliant head covering should be obtained at the time of the stop as evidence to support the violation.
-Section 27803(b) VC should be used to cite the operator of a motorcycle, a motor-driven cycle, or motorized bicycle for not wearing a safety helmet, or for allowing a passenger to ride without a motorcycle safety helmet.
•
Normally, the driver should not be issued a citation for a passenger 16 years of age or older not wearing a motorcycle safety helmet when the passenger has been issued a citation for a 'violation of Section 27803(c) ve.
•
Section 27803(c) VC should be used to cite the passenger of a motorcycle, a motor-driven cycle. or motorized bicycle for not wearlng a safety helmet.
Officers shall focus enforcement action on the following:
• Motorcyclists not wearing any type of head covering.
• Motorcyclists wearing a head covering which is obviously not a motorcycle helmet, such as a styrofoam bicycle helmet, football helmet, ball cap, scarf, stocking cap; leather aviator cap, any variation of a fabric cap. etc.

You "hangout" at a starbucks till midnight almost every night? Are you 14 years old? That explains the lack of throttle control.
OP, when you move to Bakersfield, make certain that you check out the country in the Southern Sierras toward Lake Isabella...there's a lotta good ridin' out thataway. You can make the loop north of Kernville and come out a couple different places. You can go thru the Walker Pass and end up on the 14, go north to the Eastern Sierra, south to Mojave and back up the 58 thru Tehachapi.
And, of course, there's the Walker Flat and Paiute Meadows area off the Caliente-Bodfish Road...you are in for a treat!

I didn't pull that out of my ***. This is the actual CHP policy which has been in effect since April, 2009 after two Appellate Court decisions were handed down in Quigley V CHP and CHP V Superior Court of Santa Cruz. Look them up.
Any CHP officer (or any other law enforcement officer) citing for a non DOT motorcycle helmet is in violation of their own written policy. A third grader could beat that ticket in court. If you got a ticket after April 2009 and paid it, you screwed up.
I wear a DOT helmet. Most of my friends don't. We encounter CHP all the time and never get stopped for it. I also ride with V&H big shots for the last 14,00 miles. No ticket yet.
I do apologize for grouping you as a non Californian, my mistake.
The cage is a different story. Fifty state compliant or a huge fee. $1500 for my dodge dakota. Cheaper to buy a different hood for it because the sticker is there. Once they know you are screwed. Great riding though.
