Picked up a 6" one from Seven Saturdays Motorsports a month or so ago. Truthfully, I don't listen to FM radio all that much so I was ok with somewhat reduced reception.
Well, being that it was in the 50's today here in NJ, I went for a beautiful ride. And I must say that it worked better than expected. Sure it faded here and there, but for a tiny little 6" piece of powdercoated steel, it worked well. And the rear of my SG is that much cleaner. Of course at some point, I will be going to a hidden antenna set-up, but for now, this works swimmingly.
When I added a detachable tour pack to my SG, the stock antenna hit the tour pack sides. Did not want to go with the tour pack mounted antenna for wanted to just quickly attach and detach the tour pack. Pep Boys had an $8.00 stubby wip antenna that worked great. Had to do a little bit of custom work on the mount, but looks stock after I was done. I'm sure I lost a slight bit of reception distance with the short antenna, but have not really noticed and save money over the HD short antenna or the hidden antenna that installs under the fairing.

Can you enlighten us on the custom work you had to do?
Just my opinion, but dont waste your time or $$ on a hidden antenna under the faring, might as well hav no antenna! Sum hav had luck running stock antenna up along frame under the seat.

Yeah, I tried that, it sucked - for me anyway.
This thing seems to work well, and is (I think ) pretty stylish from Kuryakyn (yes, I used Kuryakyn and stylish in the same sentence. Shocking, I know).
XM is satellite so height really doesn't make as much difference. For satellite it has to be visible to the source satellite. This is why you loose signal around tall concrete buildings and such.
