The wife and I have the same outlook on life. We work hard, and we play hard. we now have 3 harleys, 1930 plymouth, 1975 chevy truck (my highschool project) and a fleet of dirtbikes. and we still want more. are we rich, absolutly not. we save, we budget, we make a plan and enjoy life. were here once, may as well leave a mark.
This isn't to whine but you guys in Touring have best inputs! This is about buying a New tri glide. $35K. Well I really want one but having a real hard time pulling trigger on cost of these things. I want the water Head so used is out of question. This will be my last Harley so what the Heck? I will have to finance about 10K for a year. Is everyone on here buying new Harleys Rich? Just would like some of your thoughts on how you spend this kind of money on Hobby? I have had about 6 Harleys over past 20yrs so I have paid the price along the way....But this one has me waking at night with this purchase on mind!

My first bike was a college graduation present to myself. I contemplated what I was going to buy for a while before I decided on a motorcycle. I thought about a boat, or a jet ski, or a off-road jeep, or a ATV... Ultimately decided that I would get the maximum usage out of a motorcycle on a regular basis. I bought something I enjoy using, I can use it every day if I want without sacrificing time or taking days off work. It just made the most sense. Now I own 3.
Simple question and you will have the answer.
Can you afford the loan?
Only you can answer that.
If you can without sacrificing the everyday necessities well then.......
Yes it is a hobby but at some point in our lives we hopefully get to the point that we have discretionary income.
I also ask how often will I use the item.
What will the return in enjoyment be.
For example if you ride with your wife and this will give you both more time together then the ROI is worth it.
I agree with that 100%.
My thoughts were always if its a bike, boat, streetrod or any toy then I will pay cash. If I can't then I don't buy it. After two divorces I have modified that philosophy slightly but not by much.
Just got a tax bill for 12K, if I would have received it before I got my 14 Ultra I would have held back. Reality check, if I have to find money for the stinkin government, I can find money for myself. Fast enough I will be buying real estate permanently 6 feet under, might as well enjoy my time on this side of the grass.

Hobby?
If this is just a hobby to you, I understand your reluctance.
I made it more than a hobby. Put over 50% of my yearly traveling miles on my bike. Made the decision much easier and I feel a lot better about it also.
Ditto bud,
My ride is my way to work.
One can live in the cage and drive to work, one car after the other, no deviations, no distractions, listening to the morning jabber on the box, sleeping your way to work or one can ride to work listening to that sweet rumble between your legs knowing that at any time you may need to call the tow-truck to come and pick up that POS!
I was tooling down a two lane last weekend, the sun was shining, a little ZZ Top playing and thought "Man, it don't get no better than this." I enjoy work but I also work so I can enjoy my passions. Money is cheap right now, if you can budget it - don't be a woulda, coulda shoulda...
