Default Torque seems short

put pads on the front of my 04 Road King. Harley shop told me 38 foot lbs for mounting bolts and 180 inch lbs for pad mounting bolts.

it just seems the bolts were much tighter than that when removed. is that normal? do they tighten up with time?

For what it is worth, the specs for my '12 Ultra say 28-38 ft lbs and 120-180 inch pounds for the mounting bolts and pad mounting bolts respectively.

I don't think the factory owns torque wrenches...

I've done the first service on a lot of bikes, and the derby cover bolts are usually WAY overtightened, as is the oil filter....

Didn't answer your question, but offered a bit of insight....

I don't think they get tighter but they do 'seize up' a bit over time (particularly the mounting bolts.)

True. The effort to undo a screw is not a reliable indicator of how tight it was when first installed. Damp and dirt get in and take a hold. Early Jap bikes had serious problems with that and it was common to have to drill out the stock cover screws, even on a near new bike. Modern bikes have much better quality metals and protective treatment, but the underlying problem is the same.

Then there is also the loctite factor.

I did consider that, but the threads were really clean when bolt came out. You usually see some still on threads after removal

Ya don't have to believe the factory engineer's torque spec. There is always, tighten them up til they strip and back off a quarter...

And this shows the value of a hand impact wrench for loosening.

I've noticed that phenomenon as well.

My torque wrenches are longer than most other hand tools that I use. When I loosen a bolt that I had torqued previously it always seems too tight. I figure that I'm usually taking it loose with a shorter wrench and it doesn't have the leverage of the torque wrench.

I'm sure that's not always the case.

Edit: Inertia may have some effect on it.
