Default Oil guage question

I was out on my bike today (Finally) and I noticed that as I was running the guage registered around 32 psi, however while idling at a red light the guage registered zero. Is this supposed to happen or am I losing oil pressure.
Thanks in advance,
Jorgy

If you look real close its probly on the first mark, 5psi, the gauges are electric and not that acurate at idle, this is normal and nothing to worry about. You also have a oil light if it comes on, shut it down and check things out.

Thanks very much, I'll take a closer look at the guage, and no Oil light has come on.

On mine, the needle rests rights on the pegat idle so its actually showing less than zero pressure. The dealer checked it out last time I had it in and said it was fine. If there was really no pressure, the 96" must be one hell of a motor as it has lastedabout 6,000 miles now

The only things on a Harley engine that need oil pressure are the lifters. The rest of the engine simply needs oil flow, as there are no sleeve bearings that require pressure. If you lose oil pressure your lifters will start clattering loudly. If your oil light is not illuminated you have oil pressure, assuming it is working.

Strange thing is that the gauge worked fine (showing ~5psi at idle) for the first thousand miles. Then it started dropping down to the peg and has beendoing thatfor a few months now. The dealer checked the pressure and said it was fine.
