Certain things I buy from Harley only.
Gaskets are one of those things.
You will read on here from guys who make their own gaskets, use aftermarket gaskets, say they use the same gasket 10 times and so on....
What's a gasket 8 bucks? Whatever it is it's not worth dealing with a leak cause I tried to save 5 bucks. J.m.o.
The HD primary gasket is bonded to steel, I'm sure it is awesome.
The aftermarket still makes available the "paper" type.
the advantage to these is cost, also the paper will confirm to any imperfections, where the steel will not.
when i needed a gasket for my evo, the "new" type wouldn't seal the primary- the dealer, of course, said I need new primary cases....
I got a James across the street for about $9. it's still on there.
I've popped the cover on my evo and reused the gasket (James that comes w/silicon bead on one side) about 5 times-no leak.Just popped the cover on my "06 RK and reused it (brand unknown/probably stock)-no leak......so for the answer to your question,NO.

This is what I do to avoid tearing a sticky gasket:
- Loosen all screws then gently tap the cover until it 'sounds' freed,
- Inspect the position of the gasket along the gap,
- Then remove all screws and cover.
