Historic Route 66 is an awesome ride and I would recommend taking it where you can. In many areas you can see the interstate from old Rt 66 and there's a lot of the old road that's no longer in use. If you're a car guy it would be hard not to really enjoy the Mother Road. Russell's Truck & Travel Center on I 40 in NM has a free car museum that's pretty impressive and there's lots of gift shops and restaurants dedicated to Route 66 all along your trip. Google it and you'll get a ton of info. Your only about 60 miles from the Grand Canyon and if you have never been there it's another good ride. When I rode Route 66 from southern calif back east I road about 500 miles a day and the fellow I road with is 75 years old and had no problems with the distance per day. The other forum members have made great suggestions as far as prepping the bike, carrying some tools and a good cell phone and tire repair kit for an emergency. Someone also suggested a couple of long rides to get used to it, good idea I think. If you can't just do what everyone said, take it easy the first day or two! Speaking of "take it easy" you might also want to stop in Winslow, AZ, there's a girl my lord in a flat bed Ford, no really there is! Enjoy, I know I did!

Don't overthink it. Sounds like you've got a whole week to do this. You can comfortably do 250-300 miles a day and take in some sights. Plan an interesting route day by day. I've found it helps to have a daily destination for something like this. Have a good time.

thanks guys
its a good 3 days ride, two if you push. Service your bike, pick out some interesting roads and ride. IF you get lost, thats part of the adventure.

You're starting to over-think over-thinking

Just get out there and enjoy the ride. You're going to have a blast.

lot of good advice given --

let me add this -- its not the number of miles, its the number of hours it takes to get the miles. --

I would suggest that the first day you make 200+ look at a map and stop at the closest town over 200 miles -- then figure how you feel and go from there --

Did chicago to Las Vegas last year using route 66. Careful leaving Oklahoma and going into Texas, maybe I wasn't paying attention but I didn't see a gas station for 105 miles. Other than that it was really nice. New Mexico is pretty boring but indian reservations are cool. I say do most of your sight seeing in texas(leaning tower of groom and Cadillac ranch) and in Arizona, stand on the corner in Winslow and post a pic on here. Seligman arizona is cool, ran into 15 HOG members there and they were impressed that I was from Chicago. Careful going into oatman, Sitgreaves pass is a rough mountain, no guard rails either. You'll be going 15mph up there. After that you're smooth sailing.

Only helmet state you're riding thru is Nevada, from 66 you'll be hooking on route 93, the beginning of 93 is very rough. So watch the road ahead of you. Again, after that you shouldn't have any issues, see if you can see the hoover dam. PM me if you have any questions. Did this ride for 4 days did a lot of sight seeing

1,100 miles is an easy 2-3 day ride. 500 mile days are what these bikes are made for. Gas stations can be 100 miles apart in some parts of the West so if you see gas, fill up. Keep plenty of water with you and keep hydrated. Other than that, just get on the bike and ride.
