A Strange Tale
But that doesn't mean that they are all jerks. And honestly, a lot of those guys would take a bullet for someone they don't even know, so I cut 'em some slack.
When our local dealer has big group rides, we often have LEOs escort the rides and for the really large groups the LEOs will block intersections and control traffic to keep everybody as safe as possible. And they do a REALLY good job of it, too.
The Athens/Clarke County and Oconee County Sheriffs Office (Georgia) motor cops are good guys (at least the ones I've been around). They are always glad to escort our rides and they will come by and just hang out with the rest of us before the rides start.
A while back I was riding around Loop 10 (Athens, GA "bypass") in the right lane when I saw this bike coming up in my mirror in the left lane. As he pulled along side I just glanced over as I waved. I saw the guy wave back with this big grin on his face as he pulled ahead...in uniform on his cop bike. It was one of the Athens PD motor cops that often does escort for our group rides. For a minute I was a little taken aback, most of the motor cops never have waved, but then I realized that for that particular moment he was just another one of "us" riding along on his bike. And it was kind of cool. Since then I have seen several of the Athens motor cops wave.
I try to remember to treat everyone as individuals and give them the benefit of the doubt, so even though I know there are cops out there that shouldn't be cops, for the most part I get along with LEOs no differently than I do anyone else. After all, they are just guys like the rest of us, only they have a job to do that isn't popular and is often a lot more dangerous than what most of us do.
