There lies the problem; riding boots good for just that: riding.
I went to Leesburg last weekend, walked around the whole place once and was done, wearing riding boots. My sorry feet couldn't wait to get back into my work boots.
I've always been a fan of the lightweight tactical boot like those by Bates, but they were only good for walking and not working. Theirs always separated at the toes and failed.
I finally found a mfg that glues and stitches the soles on, Originalswat.com.
I have the urban style tactical side zip and laces lightweight and have an air cushion built into the heel. All this for $100.00, had them since Christmas, so far comfortable all day and the soles are staying where they should.
They have a lot of styles and ship free to your house.
Another plug for Redwings, I have had the 923's with the dynaforce insole for about 2 years and love them. My only problem is that the sole doesn't grip asphalt very well so I am careful when I have to put my feet down.
I have a tried a few different pair of boots, and I have read a ton of boot threads. and I get that everyones feet are different....Im a bigger guy, but my feet and ankels and calves are not big guy thick or fat. However the bottom of feet arches and (heel mostly) tend to hurt after standing around for a couple of hours. HD boots were the worse for standing around. (for me) maybe someone out there has the same issue...Im looking for nice full 8 inch boot that is comfortable to wear and even more comfortable for standing and walking around in....
my feet and ankles have hurt since 15 years old, $20. inner soles and no flat soles do me best, HD boots new for $49.99 on clearance. Converse steel toe shoes and boots are the best for me at work
I'm another fan of tactical-style boots. I got some Bates awhile back and have been very pleased. Got tired of clomping around with my previous, more typical style, riding boots. The Bates boots I got are "SWAT" style lace-up with a side zip and Gore-Tex lining. Have been great in the rain, very good grip, and much more comfortable when walking around off the bike.
Cruiserworks are a quality boot. They're lightweight, resilient, and make a zip-up model that's easy to pull on/off. They're a little taller than you're looking for, 11" (12" if you count the heel). They can be resoled for about $90-100 (they're water-resistant and the resole retains that). They're not cheap ($325/pair last time I looked). I have two pairs and wear them to work nearly every day. I walk around a lot, too. Never any issues. I have Harley boots too. I like the HD boots. But they're not the kind of thing you can wear all day, every day. The Cruiserworks I can.

**** special field boot. don't really look like combat boots, offer protection, and breathable. amazing boot and got nothing but compliments with those!

I personally prefer tactical boots like worn by police and military.
I wear the Belleville 960zWP Tactical Research Khyber Black 8" boot.
It has a zipper for ease of getting in and out of so you don't have to keep tying the laces.
It is also anti-slip, so your feet don't try to go out from under you when you stop at a light and there is oil on the pavement.
I find this boot more comfortable than my tennis shoes; not too hot, and they are made to be on your feet in them all day as again, they are made for police etc. They have nice arch and heal support as well.
I often wear these 8-10 hours a day, and my feet never hurt, or get tired in them.
They also make a non-waterproof version. Cost is around $135 delivered if you do some price searching on Google.
