You can use almost any oil in the primary...

as long as there are no slip/friction modifiers, no detergents, and I wouldn't go above SAE 50W. Since you are in a northern state, where temps can get pretty low, you can use a multi-viscosity oil also. You could even use ATF Type F. But, it is recommended by many manufacturers to NOT use Dexron/Mercon ATF. Many people use synthetic oil(s) even. Primary oil is mostly used for oiling the chain, and prolonging the life of the clutch disks.

been using it for a few years. i don't change it out every 2k, but i do change it with every engine oil change (5k) my cvo doesn't have a clutch adjustment since it has a hydraulic clutch, but on my old bike i would do a clutch adjustment first, then ride the bike to get the oil hot and then do an engine and primary change. always made the bike feel like a new bike

also, the rotella is jaso rated for wet clutch use, and can be had for about $13.00 a gallon. which is enough for 3+ changes.

Completed this last night, lost a very small amount at first so used a little of the new oil but worked great and looks amazing! Thanks for the help
