So I got a nice black primary cover in the mail today and want to put it on but my Harley dealership Is closed. My auto parts store has some motorcycle oil, what are my options, can I run the royal purple 10/40 for motorcycles? I have the gasket but no fluid, thanks for the help!
I'm talking the entire primary cover not the derby cover, I just had the 1000 mile service done less then 200 miles ago. Can I drain the fluid and replace with 10/40?
If you take the cover off with the bike straight up(off jiffy stand) no fluid will come out...
Tell you what, you do it to yours and have someone video tape it so we can get a chuckle over you cussing up a storm after see all the fluid running onto your garage floor....

Oh damn, I obviously wasn't thinking when I posted. I was thinking derby cover. I'll shut up now........
taking derby cover off and none will come out, taking primary cover off different situation all together. Primary oil is like engine oil, all have their own opinion. I have seen and heard everything from 10-30,10-40,aft,hd formula+,20-50.
I do know that clutch adjustment and primary oil change with the derby cover only off is 38 oz. on my 09 Ultra and primary cover off and re-install is 45 oz.
Just land the stand on a scrap 2x6. No oil will come out. However, if you want to change it, get Harley's stuff. And check the clutch and free play on cable. Most of all, if it's torx, make sure the socket is tight. Some kits do not have the T27 and more then likely, the bolts may just have loctite on them. I never use it on maintenance covers but lots of dealer do. They are not worrying about next time, only that a screw does not come loose. If the have that paint on stuff, those screws can be so tight, the heads will strip out before the threads let loose unless a little heat or impact is used. Got to correct level, not amount. Bottom of clutch spring.
