Intermittent engine light on 03 RK classic. Normal start up. Key on light on. Pump prime. Light out..start. Starts up and within a couple seconds it comes back on. 5-10 seconds then out..intermittently goes on and off while riding. Never runs different. Checked battery (pulled and tested with my work tester) all connections clean and tight. Followed instructions posted here for flash codes. Cannot get any flashes. None..leave on a 1800-2000 mile trip a week from today any suggestions?
What would cause the issue of no flash codes when I do the procedure to get the codes out?
Procedure I read:
In the data plug under the right side cover, jumper pin 1 and 2 together then turn on ignition switch to retrieve flash codes. On mine what happens is when I turn on ignition switch, I get the engine light just like normal. Pump runs and then light goes out...After a few seconds the light comes back on solid for 5-10 seconds and then goes out. It never comes back on or flashes anything..(this is key on with engine NOT running)
I was searching the forums because my '03 Road King just started doing this right after I picked it up from the dealer having my rear tire changed. I ordered the code reader tool from Surdyke, and I"m still waiting on it.
The light on mine seems to correspond to the throttle position. Say running in 4th gear at 45 mph, the light will come on. Increase or decrease the throttle and it goes out. I'm leaning towards the throttle position sensor. Also, it didn't want to start after parking, running into a store, coming back out.
Ok, this weekend I opened up the bike, pulled the seat and side panels. Well first think there after was to put a wrench on the battery cables. Well guess what, they weren't tight. Then I pulled the ECM plug and reseated it, pulled the throttle position sensor cable and reseated it. So far, the light has not come back on.
I too have an '03 RK and was experiencing the same issue as the OP. Took it to the dealer and they pulled the code, it was the battery... Replaced the battery and 0 issues from then on and that was four years ago...
