Default Clunk without a bad compensator

Hi All, I've replaced two compensators in the last three years, one on an 09 Ultra and one on a 09 SG. I can usually tell by a hard start and a clunk when putting the bike in gear. I can also feel it by a ratchet feel when I do a somewhat hard takeoff like wanting to get a head of some traffic. I waited too long to fix it on the Ultra and it cost me $1000 because I took out the starter clutch as well.

This time the 09 SG started up OK, but had a huge clunk when I put it in first gear. I mean a really uncomfortably hard clunk. So being pro active, I took it to our shop and asked them to look at it. They couldn't find anything wrong. I was excited and went and rode for a day. But the hard clunk was still there. Something was going to give, so I was still concerned.

I read some forum comments on compensators and found an old one that said something to the effect that the clutch plates could be sticking and to just pull in the clutch a dozen times before putting it in gear. WELL SHAZAM, my problem was fixed. I still can't hardly believe it, but I have been starting it cold for a few days and it is back to normal.

So, for those who are wondering if it is the compensator, pull in your clutch a few times before putting it gear and see what happens. I guess the clutch plates can really get sticky.

Starting it with the clutch already pulled in works great. Just pull clutch, start bike, put in gear and go. You will almost never hear a sound.

That is how I always start the engine. I had actually tried to fix the clunk pulling in the clutch several times without it doing anything. What finally worked was pulling it in a dozen times. Who knows why it took that to fix the problem. I'm using the oil Harley recommends. Never had this before.
