Default SEPST Update Question

I purchased a used 2009 Ultra last year after having Street Glides previously. The bike already had a Stage 2 103 BB kit with the 255 Cams, V&H Drak A/C, and V&H 2 into 1 Hi Output Pro Pipe on it when I bought it. It was dyno tuned with the SEPST back when it was installed I'm guessing around 09. I did an exhaust swap last week back to H Pipe 2-1-2 design and slip ons. It still runs decent but I want to do a tuning run with the SEPST to see if I can improve after the exhaust swap. I do not have a copy of the original tune but I am guessing it is stored in the VCI. When I hook up the VCI to the bike it says I need to update the VCI before I can do anything. I don't see any way around it. I believe I have read somewhere that if you update it you will lose the copy of the tune that is in the VCI. Does anyone know if that is true or any way around it? Any help is much appreciated.

I don't think you will. I usually don't pull the current tune off. I can understand why you don't want to loose your dyno tune. I do know if you do the update you won't change anything on the bike, so it should get the current tune from the ECM and allow you to save it, make changes and reinstall. I think the updates are new model compatibility stuff. they have had several updates for the vci since the 14's came out. Changed from 614 strategies to 617 was one of the updates. That one also updated the software to get it to work as it had to install the new maps in the software. I don't think there is any other way around doing the update. If you cancel I don't think it will let you do anything. Surely Harley wouldn't make you loose your dyno tune.

When you attach the VCI to bike and PC and switch on the bike it will ask you about the update. Do it then before you load a tune click the tuning fork and it will open a page that has VCI at the top of the screen in the center. Click VCI and it will get the tune that is in the bike and open it in the software and tell you it is ready for editing. Before doing any editing do a save as and save it to your harddrive. Then you can edit as you like or do smarttune. I would just lean the lowend and cruise area about 3% up to 3000rpms and over to 20% throttle position on both front and back VE tables.

I believe the VCI is the SEPST (little orange box). The reason it is asking you to update the VCI is because it's going to register the bike onto with the SEPST (VCI device). Once you connect the VCI to the bike and update you can not use that VCI on any other bike. They become VIN specific.

Your ECM (on board bike computer) has your current tune and you can extract this tune using the SEPST software and make all of the modifications you wish.

I've only played with my SEPST very little (Stage 1 tune and Smart Tunes to dial it in) and will admit that I am far from being an expert.

You will not loose your current tune or any other info stored after running an update.

the op's SEPST was on the bike when he got it so it is already married to it. In the last six months there has been either 2 or 3 updates. These are normal. The pv and tts do the same, just use little different method.
