Default When to do a big bore?

I just got back from a long road trip with some friends. Three guys were on Gold Wings and the other on Victory. Granted, I was the only one riding two up, but they just walked, no ran, away from me on the hills. Me no like.

I'm thinking of a doing a 107" kit. I've got 48K on my Road King Classic.

Whadya think?

Did mine two years ago. It's like I'm not even on the same bike, wouldn't hesitate to do it again. As a matter of fact I like some of the new features on the Rushmore models but can't pull the trigger cuz I don't want to lose my 107!

I agonized over this when I did my cam last summer. I liked how much stronger the cam made the engine and my mechanic tried to sell me on a 106 kit next. This is my first big twin of any brand so I wasn't feeling that inadequate being left behind except one day when a Concours 1400 walked away like my motor was off. I know how powerful those motors are so I got over it pretty quick.

The thing that put it over the top was a slight oil seepage on the front of the motor. I knew I had to take the top of the motor off anyway so I planned to replace the cylinders. The project ballooned into an entire top end. I'm happy I did it. I even chose to replace the exhaust. It only remains to get a proper tune.

I always ride two up on my '09 RKC. It's got the SE 103 big bore with the SE255 cam. It's been dyno tuned as well. Now, even going up mountain roads I keep up with anything. Admitedly I don't ride faster than 85 or 90 anywhere. But it runs much better than stock.

Don't wait if you don't have to. Like having a new bike and nobody under a 120 runs away from my bike now. Can pass a semi with a flick of the wrist. Best $$ I've spent.

If you are considering it, do it. I have a 2012 Ultra Limted and had the 107" build done in December. Totally different touring bike. Sure, it now accelerates from a stop to 100 like crazy but more important to me is the overall touring performance. It now pulls in 6th gear uphill so no more downshifts. Great passing power and I can do all this 2-up. I also believe the bike is MORE reliable as it was built by one of the top builders in the US and we used top shelf parts. My bike now has more power than a Goldwing. From a power standpoint it's still not even in the same league as the K1600 though.

I cant believe I waited this long to do mine, but if you feel the itch to do it your ready, question you need to ask yourself how much do I spend. Go big or go home

If ya feel the "need"; just do it. Plan and do it right if ya do.
