Hello All,

I've been reading HD forums since I bought my first HD three years ago. I've always enjoyed reading the forums and have found them to be very informative.

I do have a question you may be able to help me with. The audio mode switch broke a few days ago. When I press it in the down position it stays down and does not return to its neutral position. I confirmed with the dealer this past weekend that the entire switch needs to be changed. When I asked the parts dept. if they had an idea of how much service charged to do the work they said "a lot".

Questions:

I am pretty good with mechanical stuff. Is this work that I can do myself?

Does anyone know the part number and if I can buy it online?

I've searched online and have seen that the issue with the mode switch breaking is pretty common, but havent seen much info on how to fix.

Thank you All in advance

You can get part from New Castle HD in Pa for ~$48 pn 71642-08. Never replaced one but think just be matter of opening up left side shell removing old switch and soldering leads to new switch.

14 SWITCH ASSEMBLY, audio control +/- w/10181 & 72266-94
Part No: 71642-08

Superseded part nos: 71593-96

From experience experimenting with projects on my own with factory switches, it will be a pain in the butt to do, but no difficult.

I suspect that the hardest part would be to run the wires from the new switch to through the existing sheath, so just run a new one adjacent to it. The new switch will likely have pin terminations on them that I believe are designed to be put right into a factory harness in the fairing.

In other words, trace the old switch wires to the harness plug in the fairing. Buy the special tool that lets you pull the pins out of the harness, and run the new wires into the harness replacing the pins you just pulled.

This is all speculation as I have never done this before, but just going from what I have read and seen so far.
