Hey guys, I'm helping a friend install some apes on his 05 Road King Custom this weekend. I don't have much experience with touring models and was curious if you all had some tips/tricks specific to this model. I've searched and didn't find much. If there's a thread already I would appreciate a link. I've installed bars before, just not on a road king. We've got a service manual and I'm a pretty competent mechanic. I'm just looking for advice that will make sure things go smoothly. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Road Kings are pretty easy, but if you have not bought one yet, get a 1 piece top clamp for the bars, if you don't they probably will brake in the center in a split mount.
Agreed on both these items. Also, check out YouTube. There's a great video of two women doing this on a Custom. Shows every step. But they don't change the bushings. You should. Also, make sure when done that you adjust ALL of the cables. Just because they fit doesn't mean they are adjusted. I just did this job this spring and adjusted the throttle and idle cables. Neglected the clutch cable. It fit, so I figured it was fine. It stranded me this weekend just from a bad alignment (too tight with the higher bars). Fixed now. So remember to adjust throttle, idle AND clutch cables after.

I just finished an install of Wild 10 inch wo515 on my 06 King today.
Used the Novello wiring extensions 12 inch which is quite convenient and used the existing cables and brake lines.
The lower section of the upper brake line must be straightened and looks ugly when done.
The clutch cable is too tight if left attached to the attachment clip.
I attached zip tie to the handlebar rather than having it flop around.
Braided cables will be ordered right away and I would suggest that anyone doing this installation should buy the appropriate + cables and brake lines if they care about appearance.
Its not that difficult...view the videos and search this forum.
Take your time and be careful with the paint and chrome...easy to scratch.
Thanks for the replies everyone. We had the one piece top clamp, poly bushings and new cables. It's gone smoothly so far, we had some outside issues come up so we didn't get finished. Just have to finish up the wiring, bleed the brakes and adjust all the cables. Should have it done by the weekend, day jobs permitting. Thanks again.
