Default 99 flht swing arm interchange?

hi folks, my 99 flht was hit by a buick. the swing arm snapped at the axle, in 03 HD made a stronger swing arm, my question is can the 99 be updated to the 03 style swing arm? the swing arm pivots on the rear of the trans case, does the trans need modified ie width, diameter, etc...same question for the frame mounts too.

I think you can use a swing arm up through at least 2006. I've seen a post somewhere (not on this forum) that I can swap this style even on my 1980 Shovelhead FLT.

search for swaps- I think GRBrown has swapped swingarms along with other mods.

the "Rear Fork" as HD calls it is 47549-97- so introduced on the 1997 model and carried forward to 2002 when it was replaced by 47549-02 according to my parts books.
by 2006 47549-02A...I don't know what revision the A denotes- but minor

It was actually 02 it was beefed up from 3/4 to a 1" axle. I upgraded my 01 Road King and there was some transmission modification required but can't recall where I got the kit.

Here is a link.

Any 02 - 07 swingarm works. Here is a parts list that I used to do mine. You use the original 5/8 axle shaft.

Later model swing arm conversion

48487-02*Spacers Qty = 2
48489-02*Spacers Qty = 2*
9208 Spherical bearing Qty = 2
Alternate Spherical bearing source - Aurora Bearing (Illinois USA) GE25ET-2RS
47564-86B*Rubber mount Qty = 2
McMaster-Carr #6381K536 bushing 3/4 to 5/8. Qty=4

Need to cut bushings to spacer size and ream for 5/8 shaft
PermatexŽ High Temperature Sleeve Retainer to lock bushings to spacers
Need to use pre 02 belt guard if using original wide drive belt
Need to replace 3/4 " bearings and spacer to 1" for rear wheel.
Need to use 1" axle with spacers.

Default I replaced mine

I just completed mine a few days ago. I needed a new tire for inspection anyway so I decided I would use the CCE kit to replace my stock swing arm bushings, the back end was very unstable. Well, when I removed the swingarm, I found the dreaded crack. Glad I did not order the kit I was going to, because now I needed a swingarm. I went all in and began shopping. Last thing I wanted to do was not ride.

I was not able to take my time and wait for the best deal on some used parts since I am impatient, so some things I know I paid to much but the results are unreal. I ordered the CCE kit to add a 2002-2007 swingarm, with their new pivot axle. Off to EBay and I picked up a swingarm with 1" axle, 03 caliper, a 03 belt pulley so I could keep my belt, an 04 RK wheel, 04 brake rotor. I picked up all new hardware, nuts, bolts from the dealer. Got a rebuild kit for the caliper so I knew it was fresh. New rubber bushings to top off the new swingarm kit. I ordered new 1" wheel bearings, and new swingarm bearings. I know I am forgetting a few things because I do it have my list next to me but feel free to ask.

Bottom line, when it was done and I took it out for a ride, an instant noticeable improvement. I had to take it easy a bit because remember what started all this....needed a new tire. But, I was able to put a few hundred miles on this weekend, man what a fun ride these bikes can be when they are working right. My bike is a 98, should not be much different than yours, I will gladly say that the money spent was worth every penny. Any questions...let me know.

Oh and for those who say you have to get the bearings pressed, I almost went and bought a press but after reading all the other forum info, and asking a lot of questions, I used a small vice, and a BFH, the fit is snug but not bad, things slid right in. Good luck.

That'll be me! I did it to an earlier model, my 1990 Glide and hit snags that won't affect a later bike. I replaced the rear wheel and rear brake caliper as well and used a True-Track conversion kit for the swingarm axle. That raises two topics:

1. Your swingarm axle is smaller in diameter than the later swingarm uses, however there are kits available with suitable swingarm bushings to bolt right up. Don't try to drill the hole in your trans casing to take the bigger swingarm axle!

2. Your current brake caliper won't easily transfer over to the later swingarm. It adds cost, but I used a later wheel and caliper. Your current brake rotor won't swap over to a later wheel either. I was lucky and got all my parts from a trike conversion, which included all the parts I needed in a single package, secondhand off Ebay.

3. As I got a free later spec narrow pulley in almost new condition I swapped to the 1 1/8" belt, which allows me to use a 150/80 tyre. (I cannot lie - a 160/70 now, but that is another story!)

4. Any questions, do ask!

That's what I did plus the cash I saved by bushing the stock spacers paid for a set of ProGlide Isolators with 17-4ph stainless pivot bolt. Used Permatex high temp bearing mount 64000 to secure the bronze bushings inside the stock spacers.

I purchased a 2007 takeoff swingarm complete with 1" axle, wheel and tire, brake caliper w/good pads. two of the bushings, rotor and pulley and new pulley and axle bolts for $250.00 shipped.

Actually, any touring swing arm from 02 - 08 will work , same part number thru the years, I use the Sta-Bo bushings to run the newer swing arm and use the same swing arm 5/8 shaft thru the trans. works great, have done 5 99 and 00 bikes. on my own I use the 08 rear OEM brembo brake and swing arm which helps me with the 180 tire I run on the rear. you will need to update your wheels bearings to either 1 in. or 25 mm. I went to 25 mm bearing for the rear and front wheels, those are the sizes that will be more readily available in the future.
