My .02 cents...I literally just got mine back from trans work. The cheap *** main shaft bearing probably failed. Take it to a local indy shop with a good rep. I got lucky, a few ***** had got out but only needed to replace the output gear assembly (which holds the bearings) no other gears or major parts, just gasket kit and related. All reassembled and I swear it shifts better and smoother now that it did when I got it at 500 miles. And it cost about $575 all total.
Four your information:
whoever looked up the part for the whole transmisison does not know how to follow through on a part lookup: the current number on the whole transmision is 33162-07A. However, Jon at Horny Toad informed me that this is NOT an assembled trans (it is seperate parts)
The rebuild by Baker, including shipping from Delaware, is less than what the special tools would have cost me to do myself (not to mention the parts) and it will have a 1 year warranty.
Some years ago I had problems with the trans on another brand bike and did as lp suggests. I had the trans dismantled to find what was wrong and get a price (breath-taking!), then fairly easily found a secondhand take-off with far fewer miles than mine. Today I would skip the first part and go straight to purchasing a secondhand one, there are plenty on Ebay looking for a new home.
Why would one buy a used Transmission with unknown history on Ebay for $900 when one can get your own trans rebuilt by Baker ...most likely for less than $500 shipped?
