Alright, 20+ mile ride and NO ISSUES. Looks like it was the battery connections.

Thanks to those who responded with their opinions, they are greatly appreciated.

never replace the regulator with a chrome one; they run hot by design, and chrome doesn't dissipate heat very well. I don't run a regulator cover for the same reason...keep the airflow through the fins unrestricted

i said it once i'll say it again, poor design they put the regulator in the wind to keep it cool then they mount the oil cooler under it,last time i was in school they taught me that heat rises don't think that changed.so now you have 212f or more of oil temp.right underneath the regulator....hu duh

Well yesterday I think I ran into the same issue many are having with the VR on my 2012 Road Glide. I had the recall done at aprox 1K. I had a couple issues before the recall where my CEL would come on and the Battery light. Voltage would drop to between 10-12 volts.

Well coming back from Laconia in June, Same thing happened and within 10 miles the CEL went off as did the Battery and the voltage jumped back to the 14+. Dealership said thy tightened some lose battery connections but said everything else was fine.

Yesturday while riding it happened again however this time the CEL didn't go off either did the battery light and finally it died. Had it trailered to the dealership and waiting to hear the prognosis. Of course my warrantee went out in May, however from reading it seems even with the recall there is a significant continued issue with the VR on the 2012. If it is the VR, I will be fighting with the dealership or with Harley directly if they try to charge me for it.

Will update when I know more info.

***** Update******

I received a call from the dealership yesterday. They charged up the battery and checked connections and checked the VR. They said everything was good and no CEL came on during there test ride. I told them they needed to look deeper because as I told them after the breakdown the CEL and Battery light and voltage drop was intermittent till this past time that brought me in.

Gee wouldn't you know when they measured the voltage and amps at the VR it was toast and only a matter of time before the problem began again. They replaced the VR and everything is good except my Wallet! $325.00 minus the generous $50 gift card for future parts. They said since the Warrantee was out and its an electrical part that is only warranted for 1 year they could not do anything. I asked for the old VR back and I will be taking my fight directly to HD Customer Service. 2 VR in a matter of 2 years and this with a recall? Hmmm tell me there is not a larger issue at hand. This is my 3rd HD and at almost 100K total riden on all, this is the first issue I have had with a VR.

Let the fight begin.
