The part number is 16585-96, and are $1.95 each. The slot on them is NOT for a screwdriver, it is to let them self-tap into the plastic of the inner fairing. You use a quarter by twenty bolt with a PAL nut to secure it into the insert, and insert the threaded end first.

I'll betcha that's what you're gonna find...simple deal.
That could very well be the problem, and I hope is it, because I would hate to have to trade the bike in because of a squeek, lol. I am not sure if the confirms or just muddles the issue, but while riding today, I pushed on the top of the outer fairing, and the squeeking would stop and then start again once I removed my hand. It did not take a lot of pressure to make it stop.

I have the same issue but only bothers me once in a while. When in doubt...I crank up the stereo.

Easy to check, Randy...just loosen or remove the windshield enough to see if the insert has come out of the plastic, even a leeeeetle tiny bit! Your problem happened to me just that way is how I know...

Is the solution to replace them?

That's exactly what I was going to suggest.I had the squeaking problem on my `07 & that's what stopped it.

I have had similar noises and have narrowed it down to the mirrors........weird s**t. I am replacing them with the chrome versions so I'm hoping they don't make the same noise.

Yeah, that's where I was going with my post...you could try epoxying them back in if you want, I did and had good success, but the more permanent fix is to use the inserts...I went out and bought seven to keep on hand for when they inevitably go bad...for whatever reason, I remove my outer fairing a lot. I have gone to the trouble of installing studs in the bottom two screw holes... might actually be a good idea for the windshield screw holes too, just haven't decided yet. Won't work too well in the middle two.

I am going to buy some tomorrow. It sounds like that is the problem, because I had my fairing off several times. Is there a trick to installing them?

I used a bottom tap.

Yes. It can be tricky in that you'll think that the slot is for a screwdriver. Nope. It is for cutting threads in plastic. I would NOT use a tap...better to let the insert cut the threads and embed itself. Use a bolt and set nut to insert them. Search the forums, there's actually several recent threads on this very subject, and I do believe there are some how-to's on here too...check YouTube, as well.
