Default Engine Ticking Noise

I recently bought a 2010 Ultra Classic with the 96 c.i. engine and 2700 miles on the clock. The engine has a ticking noise that sounded like it was coming from the front cylinder at around 2100-2400 rpm's. It did not matter what gear or if i was accelerating, decelerating or light throttle. I assumed the noise had to be mechanical since throttle had no effect on the noise. Long story short, I replaced the header pipe with a non-catalyst header today and now the noise is hardly noticeable and has dropped to around the 1700-1900 rpm range. I find this hard to believe knowing what I know about engines and performance (ASE Master Tech./Advance Engine Performance Specialist with 30 years experience). Since the noise moved down the rpm range and got quieter, I would say it was cause by fuel mixture or timing on the front cylinder. But, it would seem that the noise would have changed with the throttle before the new pipe was installed. It's got me scratching my head. But, I'm sure happy with the results of the new header pipe.

Do you think it could have been leaky head pipe exhaust gaskets. Sometimes that sounds just like a ticking sound.

Retrop, I had considered a leak and snugged up the header nuts. I'm left thinking it was caused by fuel mixture. I've seen mixture issue's cause some crazy problems on automotive engines and I'm certain M/C engines will have the same problems, maybe worst.
